Retired Wilmington Police K9 Karson Receives a Hero’s Final Ride
The Wilmington Police Department and a community of people who loved him are mourning the loss of retired K9 Karson, a beloved Belgian Malinois whose years of dedicated service left a lasting mark on the department and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Karson passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, following a period of declining health. At the end of his life, his handlers and family were faced with the heartbreaking decision to humanely euthanize him so he would not have to endure further pain and discomfort caused by age-related illnesses.
In his final years, Karson experienced severe muscle loss, weakness in his back legs, and declining eyesight and hearing. While his body was growing tired, the loyalty and love he had given throughout his life remained unforgettable.
A Final Ride Fit for a Hero
Karson’s final journey was met with the same respect and honor he had earned during his years of service.
The Wilmington Police Department arranged a formal police escort for Karson’s final ride to Suburban Veterinary Clinic in Centerville, Ohio. It was a deeply emotional farewell for a K9 who had spent years serving alongside the people who depended on him.
For police K9s, the bond with their handlers goes far beyond the workplace. They become partners, companions, protectors, and members of the family. Karson was no exception.
Among those beside him during his final moments was his longtime handler and partner, former officer J.J. Popp.
One Last Meal
Before Karson passed through what many lovingly describe as “heaven’s gates,” J.J. Popp made sure his longtime partner was spoiled one last time.
Karson’s final meal included a New York Strip steak and donut holes—a special treat for a very special dog.
It was a simple but incredibly meaningful gesture. After years of hard work, training, loyalty, and companionship, Karson deserved to spend his final moments surrounded by love and enjoying some of his favorite things.
For J.J. Popp, it was undoubtedly more than just feeding his old partner. It was a final thank-you.
Thank you for the years of service.
Thank you for the protection.
Thank you for the companionship.
And most importantly, thank you for being there.
More Than a Police Dog
To the public, Karson may have been known as a police K9. But to those closest to him, he was so much more.
He was a partner who could be trusted.
He was a friend who never asked for anything in return.
He was a companion who shared countless days and memories with his handler.
And like so many working dogs, he gave his human partner a kind of loyalty that is difficult to put into words.
The relationship between a K9 and handler is built through long hours of training, shared experiences, difficult situations, and an extraordinary level of trust. That relationship doesn’t simply disappear when a dog retires.
In many cases, retirement is when a K9 finally gets to enjoy a quieter life—but the bond with the handler remains for the rest of the dog’s life.
A Life Worth Celebrating
Karson’s passing is undoubtedly heartbreaking, but his story is also one worth celebrating.
He lived a life of purpose.
He served his community.
He formed an extraordinary bond with his handler.
And when his body could no longer keep up with him, he was given the dignity of a peaceful goodbye surrounded by people who loved him.
That is one of the greatest gifts we can give an aging animal: the promise that they will not have to suffer simply because we aren’t ready to let them go.
Saying goodbye to a beloved dog is never easy. For a retired police K9, the goodbye can carry an additional weight because so many people recognize the sacrifices these animals make throughout their working lives.
Karson deserved his peaceful farewell.
And the formal escort provided by the Wilmington Police Department was a beautiful reminder that his service was not forgotten.
Rest Easy, Karson
There is something especially touching about a final meal of steak and donut holes before saying goodbye to a dog who spent his life serving others.
Karson’s final days were marked by the realities of old age, but his final moments were filled with dignity, love, and familiar companionship.
He was not simply remembered as a police dog.
He was remembered as Karson.
A partner.
A protector.
A friend.
A good boy.
As the Wilmington Police Department, former officer J.J. Popp, and everyone who knew and loved Karson say their final goodbye, one thing is certain: the paw prints he left behind will never truly disappear.
Thank you for your service, Karson.
Thank you for your loyalty.
Thank you for all the lives you touched.
Rest peacefully, good boy. Your watch is over. 🐾💙
