🍍 — Don’t Throw Those Peels Away!
If you buy fresh pineapples when they’re on sale, you already know how much peel gets tossed into the trash. But before you throw those skins away, save them! With a little water, a short simmer, and some time to steep, you can turn cleaned pineapple peels into a refreshing homemade drink.
It’s simple, inexpensive, and a wonderful way to get a little more use out of something that would normally become kitchen waste.
🍍 Pineapple Peel Drink
Ingredients
- 1 fresh pineapple peel, thoroughly washed
- 8 cups water
- 1 small piece fresh ginger, optional
- 1 cinnamon stick, optional
- 1–3 tablespoons sugar, honey, or maple syrup, optional
- Fresh lemon or lime juice, optional
- Ice, for serving
Instructions
1. Wash the pineapple well.
Before cutting the pineapple, scrub the outside thoroughly under running water. Since the peel is going into your cooking pot, you want to remove dirt and surface debris as well as possible.
2. Save the peel.
After cutting and enjoying the pineapple, place the peel in a large pot. You can also include the tough core if you have it.
3. Add the water.
Pour 8 cups of water over the pineapple peel. If you’re using ginger or cinnamon, add them now.
4. Simmer.
Cover the pot and bring everything to a boil. Reduce the heat and gently simmer for about 15–20 minutes.
5. Let it steep.
Turn off the heat and leave the pot covered for a few hours. This gives the water additional time to pick up flavor from the peel and any spices.
6. Strain.
Pour the liquid through a fine-mesh strainer into a clean pitcher. Discard the solids or add them to your compost if appropriate.
7. Sweeten to taste.
While the drink is still slightly warm, you can add sugar, honey, or maple syrup if desired. Stir until dissolved. You can also leave it unsweetened.
8. Chill and serve.
Refrigerate until cold, then serve over plenty of ice. A squeeze of fresh lemon or lime makes it especially refreshing.
🍋 Make It Your Own
The basic pineapple peel drink is delicious on its own, but there are plenty of ways to change it up.
Try adding:
- Fresh ginger for a spicy kick
- Cinnamon for a warm, cozy flavor
- Mint leaves for a cool finish
- Lemon or lime juice for extra brightness
- A little honey for natural sweetness
- Orange peel for a citrusy twist
You can even dilute it with additional cold water if the pineapple flavor is stronger than you prefer.
🧊 How to Serve It
For a simple summer drink, fill a glass with ice and pour the chilled pineapple peel infusion over it. Garnish with a pineapple wedge, lemon slice, lime wheel, or a few fresh mint leaves.
For something a little different, mix it with sparkling water just before serving for a fizzy homemade refresher.
♻️ A Simple Way to Reduce Kitchen Waste
One of the best things about this recipe is that it makes use of a part of the pineapple that many people automatically discard.
You’ve already paid for the whole fruit, so finding another use for the peel can be a fun way to stretch your groceries a little further. It’s especially handy when you’re processing several pineapples for canning, freezing, or preserving.
Important Food-Safety Note
Use fresh, sound pineapples and wash/scrub the exterior thoroughly before peeling. Avoid using peels that are moldy, rotten, or heavily damaged. Once prepared, refrigerate the drink promptly and keep it chilled; for best quality, enjoy it within a few days.
And remember: although pineapple contains vitamin C and other nutrients, this homemade drink shouldn’t be presented as a cure or treatment for illness. Think of it simply as a flavorful way to use more of the fruit.
