Addison Bethea came

Addison Bethea came out of the water screaming.
Her brother looked over and saw two things around her:
Blood.
And a 9 foot shark.
On June 30, 2022, 17 year old Addison was scalloping in shallow water near Keaton Beach, Florida, when the shark grabbed her right leg and began pulling her underwater.
She fought back, grabbing at its gills and eyes.
Then her brother Rhett heard her scream.
Rhett Willingham was a firefighter and EMT.
But in that moment, he wasn’t thinking like a first responder.
He was thinking like a brother.
He swam straight toward Addison.
Rhett grabbed her, fought to separate her from the shark and kicked at the animal until they could finally get away. Nearby boaters rushed over and helped pull Addison aboard.
Then his medical training took over.
Addison’s thigh was catastrophically injured and she was losing blood quickly. Rhett improvised a tourniquet around her leg and kept her awake as they raced back toward shore. ❤️
She was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare.
Doctors tried to save the leg, but the shark had destroyed her quadriceps and caused massive damage to nerves, blood vessels and tissue.
Six days later, Addison’s right leg was amputated above the knee.
But her story didn’t end there.
Just 99 days after the attack, Addison walked onto her high school’s football field using a prosthetic leg while the crowd cheered.
Rhett was later formally honored by Taylor County for helping save his sister’s life.
There is no need to exaggerate what happened that day.
A brother saw his little sister being attacked by a shark.
And instead of swimming away from danger, he swam directly toward her.
