🥞 What’s Your Pancake Level? From #1 to #9, Which One Are You?
There are pancakes…
And then there are pancakes that have clearly been through some things. 😂🥞
The photo above gives us nine different stages of pancake cooking—from pale, barely cooked batter all the way to “somebody forgot the pancake!” 🔥
But here’s the fun part: which one do you actually like?
For some people, the perfect pancake is pale, soft, and fluffy. Others want a beautiful golden-brown crust. Some love those deeply browned, crispy edges.
And then there’s #9.
Let’s just say #9 isn’t a level. It’s a cry for help. 😂
🥞 Pancake Level #1: The “Is This Even Cooked?” Pancake
This pancake has barely begun its journey.
It’s pale, soft, and still looks wet on top. You can see bubbles forming, but the surface hasn’t developed enough structure to flip safely.
Do not flip yet!
When pancakes are still shiny and wet across the surface, the batter hasn’t set enough. Waiting until the edges look more matte and bubbles have opened and stayed open gives you a much better chance of a clean flip. (King Arthur Baking)

Verdict: Put the spatula down and walk away. 😂
🥞 Level #2: The Pale & Fluffy One
Now we’re getting somewhere.
This pancake has been cooked longer, but it’s still very light in color.
If you prefer a soft, tender pancake without much browning, this might actually be your favorite.
The inside can be beautifully fluffy while the outside remains relatively pale.
Pancake level: 🥞🥞
Verdict: Soft pancake lovers, this one’s for you!
🥞 Level #3: The Classic Golden Pancake
Now we’re talking.
This is the pancake many people picture when they hear “perfect pancake.”
It’s evenly golden, lightly browned, and looks soft and fluffy.
There’s enough browning to add flavor without making the outside overly crisp.
Cooking pancakes over moderate heat helps the inside cook while allowing the exterior to develop that golden color. (Bon Appétit)
Pancake level: 🥞🥞🥞
Verdict: The classic!
🥞 Level #4: The Golden-Brown Favorite
This one has noticeably more color.
The edges are browned, the center remains lighter, and you get a little more contrast between the crust and the fluffy interior.
For people who like a little extra caramelization without going too far, #4 might be the sweet spot.
Pancake level: 🥞🥞🥞🥞
Verdict: Golden, flavorful, and still fluffy.
🥞 Level #5: The Beautifully Browned Pancake
Now we’ve entered serious pancake territory.
This one has a rich golden-brown surface with a darker ring around the edges.
It looks crispier on the outside while still promising a soft center.
And honestly?
This is probably where a lot of pancake lovers would stop. 😍
Pancake level: 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
Verdict: Crispy edges + fluffy middle = YES.
🥞 Level #6: The Extra-Crispy Pancake
This pancake is significantly darker around the edges.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with a deeply browned pancake—if that’s what you like!
The key is making sure the darker exterior doesn’t come at the expense of an undercooked center.
If the outside is becoming dark while the top is still very wet, your pan is probably too hot. Lowering the heat gives the center more time to cook before the outside gets overly dark. (Bon Appétit)
Pancake level: 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
Verdict: For the crispy-edge crowd.
🥞 Level #7: The Deep Golden-Brown Pancake
We’re officially getting serious now.
This one has a rich, deep brown crust with plenty of caramelized-looking areas.
Some people will look at this and say:
“PERFECT.”
Others will say:
“You burned my pancake.” 😂
That’s the beauty of pancakes: there isn’t one universal level of browning that everyone loves.
Pancake level: 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
Verdict: Dark, flavorful, and definitely not pale.
🥞 Level #8: The “I Like Mine WELL DONE” Pancake
This pancake is dark.
Very dark.
We’re getting into the territory where the cook needs to pay attention to whether the deep color comes from intentional browning or simply too much heat.
If the pancake becomes dark before the center has cooked, the answer isn’t necessarily to cook it longer at the same temperature.
Turn the heat down.
A properly heated pan should give the pancake time to cook through while the outside gradually develops a golden-brown crust. (Bon Appétit)
Pancake level: 🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞🥞
Verdict: You like your pancakes with ATTITUDE. 😂
🥞 Level #9: The “WHO LEFT THE PANCAKE?” Pancake
Oh no.
😂😂😂
We all know what happened here.
Someone answered the phone.
Someone’s child needed something.
The coffee needed refilling.
The dog started barking.
Or somebody simply said:
“I’ll just let it cook for another minute.”
And then…
FORGOT ABOUT IT.
This isn’t really a pancake level anymore.
It’s archaeological evidence.

Pancake level: 🚨
Verdict: Into the trash and start again.
🔥 The Secret to Getting Your Favorite Pancake Level
The biggest factor isn’t necessarily the batter.
It’s heat control.
A pan that’s too hot can brown the outside before the center has time to cook. A pan that’s too cool can leave you with pale pancakes that take too long to develop a good crust. Pancake experts generally recommend moderate to medium-low heat and adjusting based on what you see happening in the pan. (Bon Appétit)
Your first pancake is basically a test pancake.
Use it to figure out whether your pan needs more or less heat before cooking the rest.
🫧 Don’t Flip Just Because You See Bubbles!
This is one of the biggest pancake mistakes.
You might have grown up hearing:
“Wait until bubbles appear, then flip.”
But bubbles alone don’t necessarily mean your pancake is ready.
Instead, look for bubbles that have popped and remain open, along with edges that look set and less shiny. (King Arthur Baking)
That’s your signal that the pancake has developed enough structure for a clean flip.
🥄 How to Get the Perfect Flip
When it’s time:
- Slide a thin spatula underneath the pancake.
- Get as much of the pancake underneath the spatula as possible.
- Lift only slightly.
- Make one quick, confident motion.
- Let the pancake land gently.
Don’t mash it down afterward!
Pressing the pancake with your spatula can squeeze out some of the air that gives a fluffy pancake its texture. (King Arthur Baking)
🧈 Butter or Oil?
Both work.
Butter gives pancakes wonderful flavor, but it can brown or burn during repeated batches.
A small amount of neutral cooking oil can give you more consistent browning, especially when you’re making a large stack.
Whatever you use, you don’t need a swimming pool of fat in the pan.
A light coating is usually enough.
🥞 What’s YOUR Perfect Pancake?
And this is where the debate begins.
Some people want:
#2 — Pale & soft 🤍
Some want:
#3 — Classic golden 🥞
Others are firmly:
#5 — Deep golden & crispy 🤤
And then there are the people who proudly choose:
#7 — DARK & CRISPY 🔥
But if you’re choosing #9…
We need to have a conversation. 😂😂😂
🥞 The Pancake Personality Test
If you choose #1–2:
You like soft, tender pancakes.
If you choose #3–4:
You’re a classic pancake person.
If you choose #5–6:
You understand the magic of crispy edges and fluffy centers. ❤️
If you choose #7–8:
You want maximum browning and caramelized flavor.
If you choose #9:
You forgot the pancake. 😂🔥
❤️ The Best Pancake Is the One You Love
There really isn’t a single “correct” shade of pancake.
The ideal pancake depends on your batter, your pan, your heat, and—most importantly—your personal preference.
For a classic fluffy pancake, aim for a cooked, golden-brown exterior and a fully set center. For more browning, use controlled heat and give the pancake enough time to develop color without burning.
And remember:
Golden brown is a goal. Black is a smoke alarm. 😂🔥
