What’s Your Mac & Cheese Level?

🧀🔥 What’s Your Mac & Cheese Level? 👀🤩

There are nine levels of mac and cheese, and apparently we all have a different idea of what “perfectly baked” means! 😂

Some people want their macaroni swimming in creamy cheese with barely any color on top. Others believe the darker, crispier and more caramelized the top gets, the better.

So… where do you stop? 🧐

🧀 LEVEL 1 — The Soft & Creamy One

This is for the person who says:

“I don’t need a crust. I need CHEESE.” 😂

The macaroni is creamy and tender, with melted shredded cheese sitting beautifully on top but barely browned.

It’s soft, gooey and comforting.

If you love stovetop-style mac and cheese, Level 1 might be your dream.

🧀 LEVEL 2 — Just a Little Golden

Now we’re starting to see some color. 👀

The cheese has melted into a beautiful blanket, and the very top has begun turning golden.

There’s still plenty of softness underneath, but you get a tiny bit of baked flavor.

Safe. Classic. Delicious.

This might be the level for people who want a little crust—but aren’t ready to go too far. 😆

🧀 LEVEL 3 — The Perfect Middle Ground

Now we’re talking! 🤤

The top has a noticeable golden-brown color, while the inside remains creamy and cheesy.

You get that wonderful contrast:

soft pasta + creamy cheese + lightly crisped top.

For many people, this is where baked mac and cheese starts becoming truly irresistible.

🧀 LEVEL 4 — Golden & Crispy

Okay, we’re officially entering crust territory. 🔥

The cheese has browned more deeply, creating little crispy patches across the surface.

Those golden bits are packed with toasted, savory flavor.

And you already know someone is going to scrape the corners of the baking dish. 😂

🧀 LEVEL 5 — The Serious Crust

Now you’ve got a proper baked cheese crust.

The surface is deeply golden in places, while the macaroni underneath should still be creamy and tender.

This is the kind of mac and cheese where someone says:

“Don’t touch that corner piece. That’s mine.” 😂

A crisp topping provides a wonderful contrast to creamy macaroni, which is one reason baked versions are so popular. (Once Upon a Chef)

🧀 LEVEL 6 — Crispy Mac & Cheese Heaven

We’re getting serious now. 😍🔥

The top is deeply browned, with plenty of crispy little bits.

If you love texture, this could be your sweet spot.

The trick is getting the top beautifully browned without drying out the creamy macaroni underneath. Baking the pasta until just al dente before it goes into the oven can help prevent it from becoming mushy. (Jessica Gavin)

🧀 LEVEL 7 — EXTRA CRISPY

This is where the crispy-cheese fans start getting excited.

The top is dark golden, crunchy and packed with toasted flavor.

And honestly?

Those crispy edges might be the best part of the entire dish. 🤤

If you’re the person who deliberately looks for the corner of the casserole dish, this is your level.

🧀 LEVEL 8 — Maximum Browned Goodness

Now we’re approaching the danger zone. 😂🔥

You’ve got a thick, deeply browned surface with lots of crispy spots.

Some people will look at this and say:

“PERFECT.”

Others will immediately say:

“That’s getting a little too dark.”

And that’s exactly why this mac-and-cheese debate exists!

🧀 LEVEL 9 — THE DARK SIDE 😳🔥

Okay…

LEVEL 9 IS NOT PLAYING AROUND.

This is for the person who says:

“If the top isn’t almost burnt, I don’t want it.”

😂😂😂

The cheese is extremely dark and heavily toasted.

There’s a difference between deeply browned and actually burnt, though. If the cheese develops bitter, acrid flavors or becomes completely charred, you’ve gone beyond the sweet spot.

So Level 9 might be somebody’s favorite—but it definitely isn’t for everyone!

🤤 WHY DOES THE TOP GET SO GOOD?

There’s a scientific reason baked cheese becomes so irresistible.

As the surface heats up, browning reactions create new aromas and flavors, producing that savory, toasted character we associate with a great baked crust. (Jessica Gavin)

And it’s not just about cheese.

Many baked mac-and-cheese recipes deliberately add panko or breadcrumbs to create even more crunch. (Food Network)

That gives you the ultimate combination:

🧀 Creamy underneath

🔥 Crispy on top

🤤 Cheesy everywhere

👀 THE REAL QUESTION…

If you were handed nine identical dishes of mac and cheese, with the only difference being how browned the top was…

Which one are you grabbing?

1️⃣ Barely browned
2️⃣ Lightly golden
3️⃣ Golden
4️⃣ Crispy
5️⃣ Deep golden
6️⃣ Very crispy
7️⃣ Extra crispy
8️⃣ Deeply browned
9️⃣ Almost burnt

Personally, the hardest part would be choosing between a creamy Level 3 and a crispy Level 6. 🤤
