My Daughter Asked to Stop Grandma’s Pills—Then the Doctor Read the Label and Called the Police

“Mommy, can I stop taking Grandma’s pills now?”

I was standing in the kitchen, preparing dinner, when my four-year-old daughter asked me that question.

At first, I thought I had misunderstood her.

“What pills, sweetheart?”

She looked toward the hallway before answering.

“The ones Grandma gives me before bed.”

I put down my knife.

My mother-in-law, Diane, had been staying with us for several weeks while recovering from knee surgery. She had always been generous with Emma, buying her little dresses, reading her bedtime stories, and bringing home treats whenever she went shopping.

A few weeks earlier, Diane had mentioned giving Emma special vitamins to help her settle down at night.

I hadn’t thought much about it.

Now, however, my daughter’s expression made my stomach tighten.

“Can you show Mommy what Grandma gives you?”

Emma nodded and disappeared down the hallway.

When she returned, she was holding an orange prescription bottle.

I recognized the name printed on the label.

Diane Patterson.

It wasn’t a bottle of children’s vitamins.

It was an adult prescription medication.

My hands began to shake.

“Sweetheart, how many of these have you taken?”

“One every night.”

“For how long?”

She thought for a moment.

“Since Grandma came to stay.”

I struggled to keep my voice calm.

“Did Grandma tell you what the medicine was for?”

Emma lowered her eyes.

“She said it would help me be good.”

My heart sank.

“What did she mean by that?”

Emma twisted the hem of her shirt between her fingers.

“She said Daddy gets tired when I make too much noise. She said if I take the medicine, I’ll be quiet, and Daddy won’t want to leave.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
