My name is Margaret. I’m 65 years old, and my husband, Robert, is 68.
We’ve been married for 42 years. We have two children, four grandchildren, a small house, and thousands of memories that I would have given my life to protect.
I never imagined that, at our age, someone could walk into our family and destroy everything we’d built over decades with a single photograph.
It all started on a Tuesday morning.
I was preparing breakfast when a message arrived on my phone from an unknown number.
I opened it and saw a photograph.
My husband was sitting on a brown couch. Beside him was a woman with short blonde hair and black glasses. They were smiling at the camera, and the woman’s hand rested comfortably on Robert’s knee.
Below the photograph was a message.
“My name is Susan. I’m 59 years old. I want you to finally know the truth. Robert loves me. We’ve been together for eight months. I’m not going to stay hidden in the shadows anymore.”
My hands began to tremble.
At first, I thought someone might be playing a cruel joke.
But the next message shattered me completely.
“By the way, Robert has already told me why he’s been so unhappy with you all these years. You’d better step aside with whatever dignity you have left.”
I sank into a kitchen chair.
I could barely breathe.
