Just finished my first batch of onion powder! I wish it was made with my own homegrown onions, but this one came from store-bought ones. I’m slowly building my homesteading skills and learning as I go.
It turned out great and smells amazing!
Ingredients
- Fresh onions (any variety)
Instructions
- Peel and slice the onions very thinly (a mandoline works wonderfully for even slices).
- Arrange the slices in a single layer on dehydrator trays or parchment-lined baking sheets.
- Dehydrate at 120–140°F until completely dry and brittle (usually 7–14 hours).
- Once fully dehydrated and cool, grind the slices into a fine powder using a spice grinder, blender, or food processor.
- Store in an airtight jar in a cool, dark place.
This homemade onion powder is so much more flavorful than the store-bought version! Use it in soups, rubs, seasoning blends, or anywhere you’d normally reach for onion powder.
Little by little, we’re getting there! 🌱
