My Husband Came Home From a Three-Day Fishing Trip With a Wedding Ring Mark on His Finger

The Photographs That Changed Everything

That afternoon, I opened Facebook and looked through the photographs Mark’s friends had posted from their fishing trip.

There were the usual pictures.

Boats floating on the lake. Men holding up enormous fish. A campfire surrounded by folding chairs. A group photograph taken outside the motel.

I studied each picture carefully.

Mark appeared in only two of them.

In the first, he stood beside his friend David, holding a fish in his right hand. His left hand was tucked into the pocket of his jeans.

In the second, he sat at the campfire with his arms crossed.

His left hand was hidden beneath his right arm.

At first, I thought nothing of it.

People didn’t pose for photographs thinking about where their hands were.

But then I noticed something else.

David had uploaded a photograph taken on Saturday morning outside a marina restaurant.

The caption read, Another beautiful morning at the lake. Same crew, same tradition.

There were three men in the picture.

David. Peter. And another friend named Richard.

Mark wasn’t there.

I checked the comments.

Someone had asked, “Where’s Mark?”

David replied, “He had something to take care of.”

Something to take care of.

I read those words several times.

Then I checked the timestamp.

The photograph had been taken at 10:17 on Saturday morning.

I remembered calling Mark that morning.

He hadn’t answered, but he had texted me fifteen minutes later.

Out on the boat. No signal. Love you.

I stared at the message.

If he had been out on the boat, why had his friends been at the restaurant?

Maybe they had split up for breakfast. Maybe Mark really had been fishing.

There were still perfectly reasonable explanations.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was looking at the edges of a story someone had deliberately kept from me.

I opened the restaurant’s page and found its phone number.

For several minutes, I simply stared at it.

Then I called.

A woman answered.

“Good morning, Marina Grill. How can I help you?”

“Hi,” I said, trying to sound casual. “My husband thinks he may have left something at your restaurant on Saturday. I was wondering if anyone had turned anything in.”

“Certainly. What does it look like?”

“I’m not sure. I wasn’t with him.”

She asked for his name.

“Mark.”

There was a pause.

Not a long one.

Just long enough for me to notice.

“Mark what?” she asked.

I gave her his surname.

The silence that followed was different.

I could hear faint voices in the background and the sound of something being placed on a counter.

Then she asked a question I wasn’t prepared for.

“Are you his wife?”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Yes.”

Another pause.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly. “I think you need to speak with someone else about this.”

“Someone else about what?”

“I really shouldn’t get involved.”

“Please,” I said. “I’m not asking you to get involved in anything. I just want to know why you’re asking whether I’m his wife.”

She exhaled.

“Hasn’t he told you?”

My stomach dropped.

“Told me what?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Then she said, “I’m sorry. I can’t do this over the phone.”

The call ended.

I sat at the kitchen table, staring at my phone.

I tried calling back, but no one answered.

For the first time in thirty years, I wondered whether my husband had been living a life I knew nothing about.

And I wondered how long it would take me to discover the truth.
