The Canning Recipes: How to Freeze Cabbage
Freezing cabbage is an easy way to preserve this fresh vegetable for later use in soups, stews, and casseroles.
Ingredients / Materials
- 1 large head cabbage (green, red, napa, or savoy)
- Cold water for soaking and ice bath
Tools - Sharp knife
- Large pot
- Colander
- Baking sheet
- Freezer bags or airtight containers
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cabbage
Wash the cabbage well. Soak the whole head in cold water for 2–3 hours. Drain thoroughly in a colander.
Freezing Raw Cabbage
- Cut the cabbage into wedges, slices, quarters, or shred it.
- Spread the pieces on a baking sheet and freeze for 6–8 hours until solid.
- Transfer to freezer bags or containers. Label with the date.
- Use within 2 months.
Freezing Blanched Cabbage (Recommended for longer storage)
- Cut the cabbage into wedges, slices, quarters, or shred it.
- Prepare a large bowl with ice and cold water.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the cabbage and blanch for 90 seconds.
- Quickly drain and place in the ice bath to cool. Drain well.
- Spread on a baking sheet and freeze for 6–8 hours.
- Transfer to freezer bags or containers. Label with the date.
- Use within 9 months.
To Use
Add frozen cabbage directly to soups, stews, or stir-fries. No need to thaw first.
