The Canning Recipes: How to Freeze Cabbage

Freezing cabbage is an easy way to preserve this fresh vegetable for later use in soups, stews, and casseroles.

Ingredients / Materials

  • 1 large head cabbage (green, red, napa, or savoy)
  • Cold water for soaking and ice bath
    Tools
  • Sharp knife
  • Large pot
  • Colander
  • Baking sheet
  • Freezer bags or airtight containers

Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Cabbage
Wash the cabbage well. Soak the whole head in cold water for 2–3 hours. Drain thoroughly in a colander.

Freezing Raw Cabbage

  1. Cut the cabbage into wedges, slices, quarters, or shred it.
  2. Spread the pieces on a baking sheet and freeze for 6–8 hours until solid.
  3. Transfer to freezer bags or containers. Label with the date.
  4. Use within 2 months.

Freezing Blanched Cabbage (Recommended for longer storage)

  1. Cut the cabbage into wedges, slices, quarters, or shred it.
  2. Prepare a large bowl with ice and cold water.
  3. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the cabbage and blanch for 90 seconds.
  4. Quickly drain and place in the ice bath to cool. Drain well.
  5. Spread on a baking sheet and freeze for 6–8 hours.
  6. Transfer to freezer bags or containers. Label with the date.
  7. Use within 9 months.

To Use
Add frozen cabbage directly to soups, stews, or stir-fries. No need to thaw first.

Store all frozen cabbage in the freezer and use within the recommended time for best quality. Enjoy having cabbage ready anytime!
