I got off that bed and got my phone and opened the voice recorder and went and stood by the connecting door.
They were loud and they were drunk and they were enjoying themselves and I got four minutes and eleven seconds of it.
All of it. The dress, the rings, Nadia saying she had been trying to get him alone since about the February, and three other women laughing instead of telling her to stop.
Then I went and sat back down on the end of that bed.
I did not knock on their door. I did not ring anybody crying.
Because I knew what would happen if I did. They would cry and say it was a joke and it would be my word against four of them at eight in the morning, and by eleven o’clock the whole thing would be about me.
So I did the other thing.
I want to put down what those ninety minutes actually were, because people picture me plotting and it was not that.
For about the first forty I did nothing at all. I sat on the end of a bed in a hotel room with my shoes still on and listened to four women next door going to bed.
One of them used the bathroom. Somebody put a hairdryer on for about a minute. Then the light went off under the connecting door and it was quiet.
And I sat there and I was not angry.
That is the part I cannot explain to anybody. I was waiting to be angry, the way you wait to be sick, and it did not come, and it still has not.
What I had instead was a list.
Where is the dress. Who has the rings. Who has the schedule. Who is in which room. Who do I actually trust in this building at two in the morning.
I am a project manager. I have run about forty of them. And at some point in those forty minutes a part of my head that has nothing to do with feelings simply came on and started working.
At thirteen minutes past two I messaged my brother Paddy, my cousin Nuala, the planner, and the hotel duty manager.
At twenty past I booked a second bridal suite in Nuala’s name on the other side of that building.
And at twenty-six minutes past two I messaged Jory.
I need to change some things before tomorrow. Quietly. Please don’t react yet.
He came back inside a minute.
Whatever you need. Tell me what to do.
