Those look very much like cucamelons

Those look very much like cucamelons (Melothria scabra), also called Mexican sour gherkins, mouse melons, or sanditas. 🌱🍉

The tiny oval fruits with the mini-watermelon pattern are a classic giveaway. They’re actually in the cucumber family, not miniature watermelons. University of Wisconsin Extension describes them as grape-sized fruits with cucumber-like flavor and a slight sourness.

🍉 What you grew

Cucamelon (Melothria scabra)

  • 🥒 Looks like a tiny watermelon
  • 🌱 Grows on a climbing/trailing vine
  • 🍋 Tastes like a crisp cucumber with a slightly tangy, citrusy flavor
  • 🥗 Can be eaten fresh
  • 🥒 Can be pickled
  • 🌼 Produces small yellow flowers before the fruit develops (Wisconsin Horticulture)

The fruits are generally harvested when they’re around 1 inch (2–2.5 cm), while they’re young and tender. (Wisconsin Horticulture)

😍 And yes—your mystery-seed experiment paid off!

If you grew these from an unidentified seed packet with your kids, you got a pretty fun surprise. They really do look like someone made tiny watermelons and put cucumber inside them!

Try cutting one open. You’ll find a pale, cucumber-like interior rather than the red flesh you’d expect from a watermelon.

One important caution: because there are other Melothria species that can look somewhat similar, I wouldn’t recommend eating them based on the photograph alone. If you can share a photo of the whole plant, including the leaves, flowers, and vine, I can help you compare the identifying features. 🌿🔎
