🧼✨ WHITE AND SUPER-POWERFUL HOMEMADE HOUSEHOLD SOAP!
Want to reuse leftover cooking oil and turn it into a firm, effective homemade soap? ♻️🫧 Save this recipe!
📝 INGREDIENTS
🛢️ 2 liters used, filtered cooking oil
💧 300 ml water
🧪 300 g 99% caustic soda (sodium hydroxide/lye)
🧴 2 tablespoons liquid soap
👩🍳 HOW TO MAKE IT
1️⃣ Prepare the lye solution: Carefully add the caustic soda slowly to the water, never the other way around. Stir carefully until dissolved. The mixture will become very hot.
2️⃣ Add the oil gradually: Slowly add the filtered used oil while stirring continuously.
3️⃣ Add the soap: When the mixture begins to thicken, add the 2 tablespoons of liquid soap.
4️⃣ Keep stirring: Continue mixing until everything is evenly combined and the mixture reaches a thicker, more uniform consistency.
5️⃣ Pour into a mold: Transfer the mixture to a suitable mold and leave it undisturbed until it becomes firm.
6️⃣ Cut into bars: Once hardened, carefully remove it from the mold and cut it into individual bars. 🧼✨
♻️ A GREAT WAY TO REUSE USED COOKING OIL
Instead of pouring used cooking oil down the drain, soapmaking can give it another purpose. However, the exact amount of sodium hydroxide needed depends on the type and condition of the oil, so a lye calculator should be used rather than assuming a fixed amount will work for every batch. Used cooking oil is best treated as household/laundry soap rather than body soap unless it has been properly formulated and tested for cosmetic use. (soapformulator.com)
⚠️ IMPORTANT SAFETY WARNING
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide/lye) is highly corrosive and can cause serious chemical burns and eye injuries. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles, long sleeves, and closed shoes. Work in a well-ventilated area and keep children and pets completely away from the workspace. (Poison Control)
Always add lye to water—not water to lye. Never use aluminum containers or utensils for the lye solution, and don’t mix lye with other household chemicals. If lye gets on skin or in the eyes, immediately flush with plenty of running water and seek medical attention for significant exposure. (Poison Control)
Important: Because this recipe uses a large fixed amount of lye with an unknown type of used oil, I would not recommend publishing the 300 g lye quantity as a universally safe recipe without recalculating it for the actual oil used. Different oils require different amounts of sodium hydroxide. (soapformulator.com)
