What’s Your Grilled Chicken Level?

From Perfectly Golden to Extra Crispy! 🍗🔥

Let’s settle a delicious debate: How do you like your grilled chicken?

Some people love their chicken lightly golden and juicy, while others prefer a deep-brown crust with beautiful grill marks. And then there are those who believe the darker and crispier, the better!

This fun grilled chicken challenge features nine different cooking levels, from A to I. Each piece has a completely different appearance, texture, and level of browning.

But here’s the big question: Who’s choosing I?! 👀😱

Whether you’re a fan of tender, juicy chicken or love a smoky, heavily charred finish, there’s a level for everyone.

🍗 The Grilled Chicken Levels Explained

Looking at the picture, here’s how the different stages appear:

  • A – Barely Cooked: Very pale, with little to no browning. It may be undercooked and should not be eaten without checking its internal temperature.
  • B – Lightly Cooked: Slightly golden, with minimal browning.
  • C – Light Golden: A little more color, with a lightly browned surface.
  • D – Golden Perfection: Beautiful golden skin and an appetizing appearance.
  • E – Deep Golden Brown: More pronounced browning and a richer grilled flavor.
  • F – Grill Master: Beautiful grill marks, smoky flavor, and a darker crust.
  • G – Extra Crispy: Deep browning with some heavily charred areas.
  • H – Very Heavily Charred: A much darker exterior with noticeable blackened patches.
  • I – Completely Burnt: Almost entirely black, with a heavily burnt exterior. Definitely not the goal!

🔥 How to Grill Perfect Chicken at Home

If you want beautifully golden, juicy chicken without burning it, here are some simple tips.

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken thighs or chicken breasts
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Instructions

1. Prepare the chicken

Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. This helps the outside brown nicely.

2. Make the seasoning

Combine olive oil, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, black pepper, salt, oregano, and lemon juice.

3. Season

Rub the mixture evenly over the chicken. Let it marinate in the refrigerator for 30 minutes if time allows.

4. Preheat the grill

Heat your grill to medium heat. Clean and lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.

5. Grill the chicken

Place the chicken on the grill. Cook, turning as needed, until nicely browned and cooked through. Avoid excessive direct heat that can burn the outside before the inside is done.

6. Check for doneness

This is the most important step!

Chicken must reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), measured with a food thermometer in the thickest part. Color and grill marks cannot tell you whether chicken is safely cooked. Ask USDA

7. Rest and serve

Transfer the chicken to a clean plate and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

Enjoy with grilled vegetables, roasted potatoes, fresh salad, or your favorite barbecue sauce!

❤️ How to Get Golden, Crispy Chicken Without Burning It

  • Pat the chicken dry before seasoning.
  • Avoid excessively high heat.
  • Use indirect heat for thicker pieces when necessary.
  • Turn the chicken as needed to prevent burning.
  • Avoid excessive sugary marinades over direct flames.
  • Always use a meat thermometer.

Remember, a little browning gives grilled chicken wonderful flavor, but heavily burnt surfaces aren’t necessary for delicious results.
