Anything Less Than F Is Just Not Acceptable!

💔🍨

The Ultimate Hot Fudge Sundae

There are desserts you eat because you’re hungry—and then there are desserts you eat because you deserve a little happiness in a bowl.

A hot fudge sundae is definitely in the second category.

And judging by the six options in this picture, there is only one acceptable answer:

F. Obviously. 😂🍫🍨

A little drizzle? Cute.

A generous drizzle? Now we’re talking.

A scoop practically disappearing underneath warm, glossy chocolate fudge?

YES. THAT ONE.

Because if we’re going to make a sundae, let’s make a real sundae.

🍨 What Makes a Perfect Sundae?

The beauty of a sundae is that there really isn’t one single formula.

At its simplest, it’s ice cream topped with a sauce or syrup and whatever toppings make you happy. The sundae became popular in the United States around the turn of the 20th century, although several communities have competing claims about exactly where it originated. Cornell’s historical account points to Ithaca, New York, where a cherry-topped ice cream creation was served in 1892. (Cornell Alumni)

Over the years, the sundae became endlessly customizable.

But there is something particularly irresistible about the classic combination of:

Vanilla ice cream + hot fudge + whipped cream + cherry.

And maybe some chopped nuts if you’re feeling fancy.

🍫 The Hot Fudge Is the Star

Let’s be honest.

Vanilla ice cream is wonderful.

But pour warm, thick chocolate fudge sauce over it and suddenly you’ve got something completely different.

The warm sauce hits the cold ice cream and begins to soften the edges. You get cold, creamy vanilla alongside rich, warm chocolate in every bite.

That’s the magic.

Hot fudge is different from a thin chocolate syrup because it’s generally thicker and richer, often made with chocolate, cream or milk, butter, sugar and other ingredients. It is meant to be served warm so it pours over the ice cream beautifully. (Food Network)

And that’s exactly why F looks so tempting.

🥄 Why F Wins

Let’s examine our contenders.

A — The “I’m Being Responsible” Sundae

A tiny drizzle of chocolate.

It’s technically a sundae.

But did the chocolate even get introduced to the ice cream?

Barely.

B — The “Okay, That’s Better” Sundae

More chocolate, nicely distributed.

Definitely an improvement.

C — The “Now We’re Getting Somewhere” Sundae

That’s a respectable amount of chocolate.

No complaints here.

D — The “I Came for Dessert” Sundae

Now we’re talking.

The chocolate is actually becoming an important part of the dessert instead of simply decorating the top.

E — The “YES!” Sundae

Look at that chocolate.

We’re approaching perfection.

F — THE CHAMPION 🏆

Chocolate everywhere.

Chocolate cascading down the sides.

Chocolate pooling around the ice cream.

Chocolate that has completely stopped pretending to be a garnish.

F isn’t topped with hot fudge.

F has become one with the hot fudge. 😂

🍦 The Perfect Ice Cream for a Hot Fudge Sundae

Classic vanilla is hard to beat.

There’s something about the clean, creamy flavor of vanilla that lets the chocolate take center stage.

But don’t let tradition stop you.

Try hot fudge with:

  • 🍦 Vanilla
  • 🍫 Chocolate
  • 🍪 Cookies and cream
  • 🍓 Strawberry
  • 🥜 Peanut butter ice cream
  • 🍌 Banana
  • ☕ Coffee
  • 🍨 Neapolitan

One of the great things about a sundae is that there are no rules once you start building your own.

🍫 Easy Homemade Hot Fudge Sauce

If you really want to take your sundae to the next level, make your own hot fudge.

A simple homemade version can be made with butter, chocolate, dairy, cocoa, sugar and vanilla. Recipes vary widely, but the goal is the same: a smooth, rich sauce that stays spoonable when it hits the cold ice cream. (King Arthur Baking)

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1½ ounces unsweetened baking chocolate
  • ½ cup half-and-half
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon espresso powder, optional
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Directions

  1. Add the butter and chopped chocolate to a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
  2. Stir until melted and smooth.
  3. Whisk in the half-and-half.
  4. Stir together the sugar, cocoa powder, espresso powder and salt.
  5. Whisk the dry ingredients into the chocolate mixture.
  6. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  7. Remove it from the heat.
  8. Stir in the vanilla.
  9. Serve warm over ice cream.

This style of sauce comes together quickly and can be refrigerated for later use; reheat gently before serving. (King Arthur Baking)

🍒 Now Build the Sundae

Start with your favorite glass or dessert bowl.

Step 1: Add the ice cream

Two or three generous scoops.

Don’t be shy.

Step 2: Add the hot fudge

And this is where I fully support F-level enthusiasm.

Drizzle it over the top and let it run down the sides.

Then add more.

Yes, more.

Step 3: Whipped cream

A big fluffy spoonful—or a beautiful swirl.

Step 4: Nuts

Chopped peanuts are classic, but toasted almonds, pecans or pistachios can also be delicious.

Step 5: The cherry

One bright red cherry on top.

Because a sundae without a cherry somehow feels like it’s missing its little finishing touch.

🍫 Don’t Stop at Hot Fudge

Once you’ve started building your sundae, there’s no reason to stop.

Try adding:

Caramel sauce
Sweet, buttery and delicious with vanilla ice cream.

Peanut butter sauce
Especially good with chocolate or vanilla.

Crushed cookies
Oreos, chocolate wafers, graham crackers—whatever you have.

Brownie pieces
Because apparently we weren’t already eating enough dessert.

Toffee bits
For a crunchy caramelized flavor.

Maraschino cherries
Classic for a reason.

Bananas
Turn your sundae into a banana-split-inspired treat.

Sprinkles
Because sometimes dessert should be fun.

🍌 Want to Make It a Banana Split?

Take three scoops of ice cream—traditionally vanilla, chocolate and strawberry—and place banana halves alongside them.

Then add:

  • Hot fudge
  • Strawberry sauce
  • Pineapple topping
  • Whipped cream
  • Chopped nuts
  • Maraschino cherries

Suddenly you’ve gone from sundae to full-blown dessert event.

❤️ Why We Love Old-Fashioned Sundaes

There’s something nostalgic about an ice cream sundae.

Maybe it’s remembering going to an ice cream shop as a kid.

Maybe it’s sitting around the kitchen table with family.

Maybe it’s hearing the spoon scrape against the bottom of the glass after all the ice cream has disappeared.

Or maybe it’s simply the fact that ice cream + chocolate is almost impossible to argue with.

Sundaes have been around for well over a century, and their appeal hasn’t changed much: cold ice cream, sweet toppings and the freedom to build the dessert exactly the way you want it. (Cornell Alumni)

🍨 The Golden Rule of Sundaes

Here’s my rule:

If you’re going to make a sundae, make it worth eating.

Don’t be afraid of the toppings.

Don’t count the chocolate drizzle.

Don’t put one tiny cherry on top and call it a day.

Build the dessert you actually want.

Because there is a big difference between:

“I had some ice cream with a little chocolate.”

and

“I HAD A HOT FUDGE SUNDAE.” 😂🍫

And that brings us back to the picture.

A?

Nope.

B?

Getting closer.

C?

Acceptable.

D?

Now we’re talking.

E?

Beautiful.

F?

THAT’S THE ONE. 😂🏆🍨

The chocolate is flowing, the ice cream is disappearing, and the dessert has officially crossed the line from snack to experience.

So I’ll ask you:

Which one are you choosing—A, B, C, D, E, or F?

For me, anything less than F is just not acceptable. 💔🍨🍫
